Romy Smith

Romy Smith is Deputy General Counsel for Research in Legal Affairs, a unit of Georgia Tech’s Office of the General Counsel (OGC), where she serves as the primary legal point of contact for the Institute’s research enterprise. She joined Georgia Tech in 2020 as OGC’s inaugural Chief Counsel for the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI), the Institute’s applied research organization.

Before coming to Georgia Tech, Romy was Director of Legal Services and Senior Counsel for the Technical College System of Georgia, advising the system and its 22 technical colleges on a wide range of legal matters. She also served as an Assistant Attorney General in the employment litigation section of the Georgia Attorney General’s Office, representing state agencies and public officials in civil rights and employment cases. Earlier in her career, Romy was an Assistant Staff Judge Advocate in the United States Air Force, where she provided counsel on military justice, legal assistance, civil law, and contracting.

Romy holds a J.D. from the University of Oklahoma College of Law and a B.A. in English from Emory University.
