As a part of the Office of the General Counsel, the Research legal team, formerly the GTRI legal team, now serves as the central resource for research-related legal matters across both Georgia Tech and the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI).

This transition reflects our expanded mission to support the Institute’s full spectrum of research—basic, applied, and translational—while continuing our strong partnership with GTRI.

We provide legal and compliance guidance on a wide range of issues, including sponsored research, export controls, conflicts of interest, intellectual property, data use, research ethics, and federal and state compliance requirements. Our team also assists with risk identification, contract review, and policy development to ensure research activities are conducted responsibly, efficiently, and in alignment with Institute and USG policies.

In partnership with researchers, administrators, and external collaborators, we promote a culture of compliance, integrity, and innovation. Whether supporting national security projects at GTRI or advancing academic discovery across campus, the Research legal team is committed to enabling Georgia Tech’s strategic vision of creating a secure nation, prosperous Georgia, and sustainable world.
